Children's Reading Day [Twitter Summary No.5]

Development of Baby's Vision and Hearing

Babies’ retinas start functioning right after birth, so it takes quite a bit of time for their field of vision to become clear.

The ability to focus on objects ("focusing") develops around 1 month of age,
Tracking moving objects ("tracking") develops around 2-3 months,
And recognizing faces starts around 7-8 months.

On the other hand, hearing exists from the fetal stage.
Talking to your baby is an important act for attachment formation.

Baby's Picture Books
Baby picture books are ones where the sound of the mother reading aloud can be enjoyed as "sound" by the baby. These can be used regardless of the baby’s age.

Books often include onomatopoeic and mimetic words such as:
"wan wan" (woof woof)
"pasha pasha" (splash splash)
"niko niko" (smiling)
Reading these rhythmic words in a fun way will help spark the baby's interest in the various sounds around them.

Colorful "Visual" Picture Books
Although babies’ vision is blurry at first, they gradually develop the ability to recognize vibrant and distinct colors as they grow.
There are also many beautiful picture books with lovely colors that adults can enjoy as well.
Such beautiful books can be a source of relaxation for parents too.

When choosing a book, make sure it is small enough for the baby to hold easily and can be recognized even with a limited field of vision.

Reading with Older Siblings
If there is an older sibling, even if the baby doesn’t understand the words, they can still join in on the reading session.
Babies are said to acquire language to communicate with their primary attachment figure, usually their mother.
Give your baby a "language shower" by talking to them regularly.
